YOUR DAD’S BEST FRIEND is a piece inspired by the fifth Chapter of DELTARUNE, and it’s main “antagonist” Flowery.

After finishing the latest chapter of DELTARUNE, I wanted to make a piece dedicated to Flowery. At this point, it’s just a staple in the writing of Toby Fox, but I was completely enamored by Flowery’s character. On the surface, a stereotypical overpowered, annoying, Mary-Sue anime protagonist type. But one look under that mask reveals not weakness, but selflessness, love, and devotion to his friends and the man that gave him the life he has.

Compositionally, this piece mainly references Flowery’s signature pose from his introductory cutscene, with little tidbits and moments from Chapter 5 sprinkled in, from infinite Flowery Dollars, to the seven suns that represent Asgore’s seven flowers. Huh, the pink sun looks a bit off now that I’m looking at it…

Lately I’ve been utilizing hand-rendered type in my works to elevate the storytelling within them, this one in particular gave me quite the struggle. Cursive is already a pain, so keeping it ornate while following the dynamic line of action of Flowery’s jacket took a long time to perfect. Even now I’m not entirely satisfied with the result but I decided I had to call it a day at some point.
